    Group Aims & Activities

Friends of St Helen’s Church aim to preserve the building for future generations.

Set on an escarpment above the River Rother, this lovely church is immediately recognisable by its ‘two-tone’ tower, which forms a notable local landmark. Described by Sir Nikolaus Pevsner as “a confusing building”, it has a fascinating history.

Listed in Domesday Book as being the only church in the ‘vast and ancient territory of Hallamshire’, the present building dates from at least 1175, with major additions in the C13, C14 and C15. One of Rotherham’s few Grade I Listed buildings, its ‘Rotherham Red’ sandstone and Magnesian Limestone tower is very distinctive and can be seen from miles around.

The group welcomes new volunteers who run a range of activities throughout the year.
