Group aims:

Well dressing is an ancient custom almost unique to Derbyshire. Harthill, which is just outside the Derbyshire border in South Yorkshire, dresses one well.

The village Well Dressing Group make a mosaic picture each year for display at the well. Using a flat moist clay base, flower petals and foliage are pressed into the clay to form the picture, which is then left at the well site for public viewing during the following carnival week.

We are a group that produces two well dressings each year displayed at the old well site at the bottom of Doctor Lane.

Group Activities:

The Summer 2018 well dressing is a picture depicting various scenes, using foliage flowers and other natural materials these are pressed into wet clay within a frame. This year the scene was 100 years when the votes for woman started.

At Christmas we produce for the village a collage which is placed in the well over the Christmas period. We have about  25 collages from previous years which go out into the community to be hung over the Christmas period such as schools, doctors, library and a nursing home.

At the well dressing openings we include the Harthill Primary School choir, The choir from Harthill voices, Harthill Morris Three shires Clog team and Harthill Carnival.

We have also provided flower arrangements for the Harthill and district Garden Society, one in the Chapel for the open garden weekend and flower festival, and one for the Autumn garden show in the village hall.

This year the group have been involved with a poppy display for remembrance day and the celebration of the end of WW1. The group have made with the help of other village organisations over 2.000 poppies which will be displayed as a waterfall of poppies on two nets in the well, for remembrance day the 11th of November 2018.

We are also holding an event on the afternoon of Saturday 10th of November 2018 1.30pm to 4pm in Harthill church. There will be a display of past well dressings, refreshments,  a display from the Memories society of a short history of the men from the village who lost their lives during WW1. We will be holding a raffle for the British Legion.

The proceeds from the tea and coffee will be for our funds to help us provide future events.

At each meeting members pay £1 and donations are welcome on well dressing opening days.

Meetings are normally held on a Wednesday as required throughout the year. Please contact us by email for further details.
