    Group Aims & Activities

NASS Rotherham is one of 97 branches across the UK and Jersey providing specific exercise sessions (gym & hydrotherapy pool based), on a weekly basis, for members of NASS (a Charity) that have ankylosing spondylitis or axial spondyloarthritis (AS). But we have only been able to offer fortnightly online sessions from Aug 2020 until normal physical access is once again available.

Often AS is undiagnosed for many years (still 8-10) with many having some symptoms as children. There is no cure for those with AS which is a chronic condition.

The exercise sessions are led by a physiotherapist and designed to maintain mobility. This includes specific exercises on mats as well as using gym equipment. In the beautifully warm pool other equipment is used to exercise using the buoyancy of the water to aid relief.

Peer to peer support is provided which reassures those with AS and their families that the condition is manageable combining some pain relief that then enables exercising.

From time to time social and awareness events help those newly diagnosed to discuss & understand their condition and the advances with current research that aids relief.
