Group Aims & Activities:

Sense is a national charity with two Sense Centres situated in Rotherham: Sense Centre Rawmarsh Road and Sense Centre Coleridge Road. Both centres provide services for people with complex communication needs. These might include people who have Autism, people with learning disabilities with additional needs, people who are Deafblind or people with single sensory impairments.

People in need of a service from Sense are usually referred by Social Services or related agencies who arrange for an initial assessment to be carried out by Sense.

Services at the centres are tailored to meet a person’s needs, either within the centre or through our community outreach teams. We work with individuals and families to establish which type of service from Sense will best meet the person’s needs.

Sense Centre Coleridge Road is a community hub where people come together to learn skills and to participate in activities such as sports, arts and crafts and educational classes. We work in close partnership with the WEA, REMA, ROAR and Rotherham United Community Sports Trust. Sense also has an allotment where people are supported to grown their own fruit and vegetables.

Sense Centre Rawmarsh Road is made up of 3 separate units on the Ashley Court Business Park. Unit 1 is a lively centre which is designed to be fully accessible in order to meet the needs of individuals with complex needs including those with physical support needs and sensory integration. Unit 7 is tailored to meet the needs of people with Autism. Unit 4 is due to open in early 2020 and will offer accessible sensory spaces as well as a café.

Working with our specialist staff, people who we support have a regularly reviewed person-centred plan – and with input from family, professionals and carers, the emphasis is on supporting the individual in making choices about their life.

As individuals’ communication methods vary, Sense adopts a ‘total communication’ approach, adopting intensive interaction, objects of reference, use of PECS, British Sign Language, Sign-supported English, as well as other pre-language strategies for communication.
